The Impact of GLP-1 Agonists on Bone Density in Menopausal Women and how to protect your bone health
I have no doubt everyone has heard about GLP-1 agonists (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists), a class of pharmaceutical medications that have revolutionized the treatment of Type 2 diabetes and obesity. These medications, including Ozempic (semaglutide), Saxenda (liraglutide), and others, work by mimicking the action of the natural GLP-1 hormone in the body, which plays a key role in regulating blood sugar levels and appetite. Originally designed to help people with Type 2 diabetes manage blood glucose, these medications also induce significant weight loss, making them highly effective for individuals struggling with obesity, a major risk factor for diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
While GLP-1 agonists offer significant benefits for metabolic health, they are not without controversy. Common side effects, such as nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, loss of appetite, and dry mouth, are well-documented. Another notable concern that has recently been raised is their potential impact on bone density, particularly in menopausal women.
