Lipoedema Awareness: More Than Just Weight Gain

June is Lipoedema Awareness Month, an important opportunity to raise awareness of a condition that affects millions of women worldwide yet remains widely misunderstood, underdiagnosed, and often misdiagnosed.

It is estimated that up to 11% of women may be affected by lipoedema, yet many spend years, and sometimes decades, seeking answers for symptoms that are frequently dismissed as simple weight gain or obesity. Greater awareness can help women access appropriate support earlier and improve their quality of life.

What is Lipoedema?

Lipoedema is a chronic condition involving the abnormal accumulation of fat tissue, most commonly affecting the hips, buttocks, thighs, legs, and sometimes the arms. It almost exclusively affects women and often develops or worsens during periods of hormonal change such as puberty, pregnancy, or menopause.

Unlike general weight gain, lipoedema fat is resistant to diet and exercise. Many women find that despite eating well and exercising regularly, the affected areas remain disproportionately larger than the rest of the body.

Common symptoms include:

  • Enlarged legs, hips, buttocks, or arms that are disproportionate to the upper body
  • Painful, tender, or heavy limbs
  • Easy bruising
  • Swelling that worsens throughout the day
  • Reduced mobility and exercise tolerance
  • Fatigue
  • Joint discomfort
  • Difficulty losing weight from affected areas

Because these symptoms can resemble obesity, lymphoedema, fluid retention, or simple weight gain, lipoedema is frequently overlooked or incorrectly diagnosed.

Why Awareness Matters

Awareness is crucial because early recognition and intervention can significantly improve symptoms and help slow progression of the condition.

Many women report feeling frustrated after years of being told to simply lose weight, despite making significant efforts with diet and exercise. Receiving an accurate diagnosis can be both validating and empowering, allowing women to access appropriate treatment and support.

Lipoedema is not caused by laziness, overeating, or a lack of willpower. It is a complex condition involving genetic, hormonal, inflammatory, vascular, and lymphatic factors.

The more awareness we create, the more women can access the care they need and deserve.

The Role of Inflammation, Gut Health and Nutrition

While there is currently no cure for lipoedema, an integrative treatment approach can help reduce symptoms, improve quality of life, and support long-term health.

Research suggests that chronic inflammation may play a role in the development and progression of lipoedema. For this reason, nutrition, gut health, and lifestyle factors are increasingly recognised as important areas of support.

The gut microbiome plays a central role in regulating inflammation, immune function, metabolism, and lymphatic health. When the gut is not functioning optimally, inflammation throughout the body can increase, potentially contributing to fluid retention, discomfort, fatigue, and other symptoms commonly experienced by women with lipoedema.

A personalised nutrition plan may help:

  • Reduce systemic inflammation
  • Support healthy blood sugar regulation
  • Improve energy levels
  • Reduce fluid retention
  • Support weight management
  • Improve digestive health
  • Support immune and lymphatic function

Many women with lipoedema also experience digestive symptoms, food sensitivities, fatigue, and other inflammatory conditions. Addressing gut health can therefore be an important part of a comprehensive management plan.

How Elemental Health Can Help

At Elemental Health, we take an integrative approach to supporting women living with lipoedema. Our practitioners understand that lipoedema is a complex condition involving multiple body systems, including the lymphatic, circulatory, hormonal, immune, and digestive systems.

Naturopathic and Nutritional Support

Our naturopaths and nutritionists work with clients to identify dietary and lifestyle factors that may be contributing to inflammation, digestive dysfunction, and metabolic stress.

Support may include:

  • Personalised nutrition plans
  • Gut health and microbiome assessment
  • Identification of food triggers and sensitivities
  • Anti-inflammatory dietary strategies
  • Nutritional supplementation where appropriate
  • Lifestyle recommendations to support overall wellbeing

The goal is to reduce inflammation, improve energy levels, support lymphatic function, and help clients feel more comfortable and confident in their bodies.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Quadvaris Therapy

Edina provides specialised Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) and Quadrivas Therapy, which may help support the lymphatic system and improve comfort for those living with lipoedema.

These therapies can help:

  • Reduce fluid retention

  • Enhance mobility and wellbeing

Clients find these treatments provide valuable symptom relief as part of an integrative lipoedema management plan.
